Travel Writing Workshop
October 2 - November 13$365
From experiences in parts unknown or in your own home, your memories, imagination and sense of curiosity travel, continually bringing you to somewhere new.
Join Toronto writer and Professor Marcia Walker in uncovering and making meaning of your experiences through fiction, nonfiction and essay to inspire your curiosity and give a framework through which you can explore your traveling spirit and your memories.
Writers will read famous travel essays and stories not only to learn about locales afar but also those close to home. The idea of travel will be unpacked as we bring to the page our own stories of being on the road or down the road. Jack Kerouac, Cheryl Strayed, Paulo Coelho, Kiran Desai, and Homer’s The Odyssey among others will all be examined and discussed for how travel opens up the possibility of exploration and narrative. Additional craft techniques specific to travel writing will be discussed such as how to handle time, narrative voice, perspective, the “other”, among others.
This workshop gives participants ample opportunity to write numerous pieces and explore their voices through different genres and types of writing.
